Reflective Response to Paper 1 Assignment (due 9/10)

What do you think about the Paper 1 assignment? Is the purpose of the assignment clear to you (i.e., even without the additional class exercises)? Do you think the assignment is too focused, or specific, or too general? Why or why not? What types of paper assignments would you like to see in the future?

I think the paper one assignment is a positive way to show us how we truly view ourselves. It allows us to reflect on our experiences and our different values we have in life. This is a chance for us to start finding ourselves and to learn who we really are.
It also points out key things in our background that shows how we were molded into the person that we are today. Different occurrences may be recognized and can be sought to as the reason why we approach different situations the way we do. Moments in our lifetime that we feel that are important and we choose to include in this paper may elaborate on vague details in our background and uncover different characteristics about our environment that shape us as individuals.
This assignment is specific enough. It isn’t too broad but yet it allows us enough room to elaborate on the important things that need to be included in our papers.
I would like to see more of these assignments because they allow us time to think about us rather than write about something we really don’t care about. It’s a strong topic and it’s really interesting even though it’s based on who we are. It gives us a chance to scratch the surface of our identity. Hopefully we will have more interesting topics such as these. It’s good to have assignments like these.

I like the Paper 1 assignment because it is clear to me. I think reading the stories out of Unit 1 really helped to clarify the assignment too. The stories were good examples and they also helped give me ideas for my own paper. “The Name is Mine,” by Anna Quindlen almost influenced me to change the topic of what my paper will be.
I think that the assignment is specific enough to understand the point of the paper while it also gives us the freedom to choose what topic we want to write about within that assignment. As a student I understand that the Paper 1 assignment is meant for us to write in order to explore identity and self.
In the future I would like to see similar paper assignments because I like when there is some guidance with the topic but also a freedom to choose what we want to write about within that topic. I also like to write persuasion papers because you can twist you opinion into what sounds like a fact to the reader.

I like the idea of the paper one assignment. I think the assignment was clear but I also found the classroom exercises to be very helpful. The paper is specific but in a way that you are not completely railroaded. I'd like to see the future assignments also have some sort of guidance to them but also with the ability to write freely within those guidelines.

I like the topic for the Paper 1 assignment. It is a good topic to write on for the first paper. It is easy to have a lot of ideas when you are writing a paper about yourself. The paper 1 assignment is clear to me. I know that I have to discuss aspects of myself and explain how they shape me. When I’m writing the paper, I will get to choose what I want to write about myself. It is a topic that is broad enough to be able to create your own ideas. However, it is not too broad that it would be difficult to focus on a few main ideas. I don’t think that there is anything wrong with the first paper assignment. I hope papers in the future are similar to the first paper. I hope that they will have topics that are easy to create many ideas.

I think that the paper one assignment is a great assignment to start off a semester with. I think it is very easy for all of us to write a paper concerning our own lives, compared to writing a paper on something we have to research. By writing about ourselves, we can make the paper as specific or as broad as we please, as long as we adhere to the assignment guidelines in doing it. I thing the assignment is okay in the way it was assigned. It may seem as if is a bit specific to some people, but to me, I think that being specific in this assignment is a good thing because we’re writing about our own experiences, and being specific is essential in order to get the reader to understand the whole idea of the paper. In the future, I’d like to continue to see paper where we can write about things within our own lives, because I think when a writer is talking about his/herself in a paper, they are much more likely to write better, compared to having to write about a topic they are less familiar with. I really like the type of writing we are doing, and I hope to see more of it in the future.

The Paper 1 assignment is a good way to start off college writing in my opinion. I believe students need to be eased into their first major college writing because it is more advanced than high school. The student needs to see how a teacher will be grading their paper; therefore, an easier topic will allow a student a better opportunity to be successful on their first essay. Although I feel the topic of defining oneself will be easy to write about, I do think it will be a fun and interesting theme to cover. I never wrote a paper about what defines me as a person. Having stated all of this, I obviously feel that the prompt has a clear purpose and did not really need to be discussed in class. On the other hand, I think the different aspects of self stated in Unit One: “Interactions: A Thematic Reader” should be discussed in greater detail in class to give us different perspectives to write our paper with. The assignment for me is on the general side; however, I feel a general prompt allows students to have diverse and different papers which are more interesting and valuable to a student’s and class’s growth. Consequently, I hope and expect the assignments in the future will be general.

I think that the Paper 1 assignment is a good type of paper to start off this type of class with. The assignment was a little confusing at first, but after talking about the different topics it became a lot clearer. It seems to be very general which lets each of us take the reigns on our own assignment instead of having to follow a set outline. I would like to have other general paper assignments as well as some that may be a little more specific. I feel that getting a different variety of papers will only benefit me as a writer.

I like the paper 1 assignment because it is a topic that makes you think about your life and realize how you define yourself. By referencing to the readings in the book you can compare how you define yourself is different to others who define themselves in a completely different way. The purpose of this assignment is clear because it refers to the readings in unit one and the different ways people have to define themselves. I think this assignment is just right for this unit, it makes sense to have this paper topic because the unit we are focusing on in class is about “Self” and the different ways people define themselves, and this paper relates to it because we are writing the important things we think define ourselves. For example, I am basing my paper on my experiences and my skills I’ve picked up throughout those life experiences, these are the things that I think best shaped me and how I define myself, in comparison to a girl in the book who thinks her name is the most important thing that defines herself. This goes to show you how different people think of different ways to define themselves. In the future I would like papers to refer to what we are learning in class, like this one, because I like to refer to things and discuss things in detail before I write a paper about a topic.

I like the Paper 1 assignment. I think it will be interesting to write about the things that define who we are, and why we are the way that we are. At first I was a little bit confused about what the paper was really about, but then I realized that it was very general. After talking about the paper more in class, I understand what the paper is about. The additional class exercise was very helpful to me, and even gave me some ideas for my own paper. I don’t think that the assignment is too general. I like having the freedom to write about what I want. However, if other assignments in the future have more guidelines, that would be fine too. I like the topic a lot because it’s making us think about ourselves and why we are the way that we are.

At first I was unsure about how to create the paper. I was alittle unsure on how or what to tie in on the topic. After class discussions though, I was very clear about the assignment. I feel that the assignment is fine because you get to look deep inside yourself to find out what effects you and builds you. I really like topics where you have to think deeply in order to write a paper. So therefore I hope to see assignmnents like that in the future.

I think the Paper 1 assignment is a really nice way to begin a class because it’s not extremely broad or extremely narrow. I do think it is slightly on the general side, but not to the point that it is too hard to write. The assignment is quite clear, but the class exercises were a huge help because I wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to write about, and this helped my develop a better idea. In the future, I would enjoy slightly more specific assignments or even other types of papers such as persuasive, but I like how this paper is about us so there really is no right or wrong topic.

I believe that the first paper assignment is a good introductory activity to the course. This paper will allow each student to realize what really defines him or her and the individual will be able to learn more about themselves that they may have not discovered before. At first, I was confused on the specifics of the paper, but after discussing it in class, I was better aware of what was expected. For my paper, I still need to narrow down my topic and focus on something more specific. I think that the paper 1 assignment is not too focused or general, I think it is just right because this allows us to explore all the different possibilities we may choose to write about, yet there is some structure. Individuals in the class may be writing about the same topic, such as the environment they grew up in or the experiences they have encountered, but their overall focus on the paper can vary greatly. I like these types of assignments because usually we are asked to write on a specific topic and that doesn’t allow us to learn more about ourselves and may be boring for some. In the future I would love to write more papers that I can learn more about myself in and have a broad yet focused assignment.

I believe the paper one assignment is a wonderful way for us students to really get connected with ourselves and learn how to define ourselves. Not only does it teach us about our qualities but helps us to pick positive qualities within our selves and learn to build upon them. Also, the writing assignment will help build to our portfolio and is very direct and fairly easy to write about for our first paper.
The purpose of the assignment is pretty clear to me and I enjoy how we were allowed to brainstorm our own paper in way because we had the assigment question but were allowed to twist it into our own topic.
I think the topic is fine the way it is, it isnt too specific or too general and when we have questions they are answered immediatley. Also, we do exercises within class that make writing the paper alot easier.
The types of paper assignments I would like to see in the future would be just as the ones we were just assigned, very culture and fun. Also, papers we can learn from and more excersises because it makes it a million times easier. Lastly, I enjoy writing papers that have to do with parts of my life and what i am interested in.

I did not like the Paper 1 assignment. I find the project to be too broad. I understand the purpose behind the assignment; however for a two-page paper I believe there should be more guidelines and structure to follow. I very much like this type of assignment and would like to see more in the future because I believe it is important to understand self. I love the freedom to write what I feel, I just find it to hard to try and define myself as a person in a two-page paper. I found the in class assignments to be helpful, and it even persuaded me to change my topic. I believe that breaking the assignment down into steps helped with brain storming and topic development. I think that it is a wonderful thing to be able to reflect back on life and share your experiences as a person with the reader. I hope that in the future there will be more free writing and possibly some poetry. I also found the in class readings from the Thematic Reader to be helpful in learning what experiences have shaped and defined the lives of others. I’ve found that the papers that are easiest to write come from the heart. That’s why I found it slightly difficult to compact my essay into two pages, but in the end found it beneficial to learn how to convey just the main points in my writing.

I think paper one assignment will let us get to know ourselves a little more. It will let us point out things about ourselves that we never noticed or really didn't want to notice. Paper one assignment will also allow us to look back at past situations; relationships and let us think how we got through them and from them, what changed us. I think this assignment is perfect even without the class exercise. This assignment is not too specific, general or focused. It's just right (ha-ha) because it's the easiest paper I ever had to write, no lie. Can't nothing be more easier than telling people about yourself or how you "define" yourself, than again, I may be wrong it might be harder than what I think...but, we shall find out....Other types of papers I would like to see in the future are close to this assignment, easy, something that doesn't require a lot of research nor thinking

Quoting Chris Dennis..."I think the first paper assignment is a good topic paper. I understand what I’m suppose to write about but at first with out all the exercised I was lost. Though I do think the topic of the paper is too focused. I like to be able to pick what I’m writing about instead of picking from a list. I thinks they’re good topics, but that’s different then being able to write something you came up with. In the future I’d like to have more freedom with my writing."

I like the idea of the first paper. The idea of writing about your self for the first paper is a great way to start the semester. When writing a paper about your self you have tons of ideas. When writing about your self it makes the assignment personal and a writing that means something to you. The assignment is very clear to me. The readings in the book and activities in class really helped me to focus on what I wanted to write. I believe that the Paper one assignment is broad enough that we are able to take our ideas and expand on them; however, we can still focused on an idea. In the future I would love to see more assignments that we can relate to our own lives. Every writer puts a little of them selves in all the writings they do. However, it is more difficult to do when you are not familiar with what you are writing about. I enjoy being able to relate myself in my writings and compare the writings to my own live. I really like the types of writing we are doing now and I really look forward to seeing more of it in the future.

I feel that this is assignment is a great one especially for freshman in college. We are at the stage in our lives when we are constantly trying to discover who we are and what makes us who we are. The assignment isn’t to general because there are a lot ways to go with it depending on the person. As far as the paper being too specific I think when it comes to self discovery one can never be too specific. I only hope that all of the other assignments we do are like this one. Any thing that makes us question something and that really makes us dig deep is good

I think that the paper 1 assignment is a great assignment. I also believe it is an icebreaker in a sense. The topic gives us a chance as students to really sit down and think about whom we are as a person and why we are that way, which leads to your identity as an individual. I like the topic because I believe it serves as a stage of transition from high school, etc, and leads us to college life, and being independent. I say this because many people do not know who they are leaving high school, and are struggling to find them and the topic is right on point for us as freshman to make a self discovery! The purpose of the paper is clear to me. The only problem so far for me, is making my explanation/paper clear, precise, and straight forward for my audience. I say it will be hard because, there is so much you want to say about yourself, and you do not want to ramble on about your life history. With that said, I would have to say that the topic is a bit broad because there are so many factors that make a person, as well as contribute to that person identity. I also feel that the topic is too broad to be limited to a minimum of 2pages when the paper has to be double space. However, I understand there is a difference between college writing and high school writing; you have to get to the point clearly, strongly and stay on topic. I would like to see more broad topics in the future, but also allow the page limit to be increased to that person’s discretion or no higher than 4pgs. I also like papers dealing with self and views a lot, because a lot of the information is from you. I also would not mind doing persuasive essays from time to time either.

I think that this assignment is something that will be very helpful. One thing many people do not do is look and evaluate themselves. This paper will ultimately help people to figure out and get updated with themselves. I think the directions are very clear and that this may be a very easy assignment to do. Writing should be something that is fun and something that you would like to elaborate on, and why wouldn’t anyone want to talk about themselves and let the reader understand who they are. I think that in the future we should do more general papers like this, papers that would help other readers to understand someone a little better. And most importantly, get the writer to think on a higher level.

I think that the paper one assignment, although similar to my previous English essays, will be alot of fun to write. I'm nervous to share myself to people I dont really know yet, but I think this will help all of us open up to one another. I'm really looking forward to more assignments like this, I really get into them. Even though it was tough at first to narrow the topic down, one I got started it was really easy to work it out on paper.
