"Call me Crazy"

Question 1. - Summarizer Stacey Tuite. The reading was about a woman named Mary Seymour, who suffered from bipolar disease. She was diagnosed at the age of 36 after she had a breakdown caused from a failing marriage and past family genetics. After Mary was convinced she had this mental illness, she was able regain control of her own life. This included eating wisely, sleeping well, and exercising on a daily basis, which fortunately made her a healthier and happier person. Although Mary was able to lead her life as a “normal” person, she did not always feel herself. She wanted to be comfortable with her illness and show people it’s not the end of the road and it is possible take control. The author of this story wanted nothing more than to integrate both sides of herself and help those traveling down a similar path.

Passage Picker:
Candida Francisco

Purpose: The author’s purpose was to; share what her identity was by telling the audience her story of being bipolar. She wants to be able to help others suffering from the bipolar disease. She is telling her story so she can “own” her identity as being bipolar (pg53 last paragraph). In the passage on (pg 53) she says, “It’s time for me to own up to who I am….” she wants to let the world know who she really is in the world. She wants the world to see her as being bipolar and not hiding the fact that she is not what everyone deems normal.

Main points: The author is trying to tell the reader that she is happy being able to be an average person in society (pg52 5th paragraph). She wants to be able to help others to be able to lead a role in society. She wants to show people what she has been through so she can help those that may be traveling down a similar road (pg 53 last paragraph). When the author says on (pg 53) “we all speak the same language, of hardship and spiritual discovery and psychological awareness”, she really shows you how she can really connect with the many others that are affected with the disease.

Call Me Crazy, But I Have To Be Myself: pp.51
Purpose: To show the audience that she is not afraid to tell people about her disorder. Also, to show that she has control of it.
Storyline: The author tells about how she was first diagnosed. Then she moves on to the period in her life when she is able to accept the fact that she is manic-depressive or bipolar.
Main Points: To share with the audience her experience as a manic-depressant and how she deals with it. Also, confirming that she is comfortable with sharing it with other people. Another point is to tell people who also are diagnosed with a disorder that they can live happy, healthy lives.

*I think she wrote this because she wanted to let other people know that she went through all of the stages and she learned how to deal with it. This essay may give insight to another person who is diagnosed and feels completely hopeless. It could also help someone realize that they are manic-depressive because she lists a few incidents and symptoms due to this disorder. Finally, the last reason I believe she wrote this is because she was truly connected with a side of herself that other people weren’t. She referred to this side of her as her “other half”

My Name: pp 18
Purpose: Names are influencing factors of the individual. It gives everyone a sense of identity
Storyline: The author describes the meaning of her name. Then she gives the heritage and significance of her name. She also gives her opinion on it. Finally, she explains to the audience that she wants to change her name.
Main Points: The author portrays the importance of your name. She relates the heritage of her name to how it makes her feel. She also shows how it affects her socially.

*I think the author wrote this to show the importance of how her name affected how she perceived herself. She wanted to share the history of her name and what it really meant to the audience. The reasons she gave the audience were all relevant to why she wanted to change her name.

** Both of these writings relate to our paper one assignment. They both hold the theme of self. Both of these authors wrote on different topics but they are relevant in the following ways:
---------------------------------
1. They both pertain to identity (self)
2. They both relate their problems to how they think they are perceived in society
3. They both take control of their situations
4. They both relate their essays to knowing the “real them”
5. They both understand what they are going through
6. They both choose to focus on the positive side of their situations
