Reflective Response to Part I, "Portfolio Keeping" (due 9/5)

What do you think is the purpose of keeping a portfolio? What type of portfolio do you think would work best for this course, ENGL 101-018 (e.g., portfolios for learning or best-works portfolios)? What do you think of the author's discussions concerning, "Choice, Variety, and Reflection" as the main components of developing a portfolio? What does "choice", "variety", and "reflection" mean to you? Which aspect do you think is most important?

I think keeping a portfolio is to have a collection of your works, good or bad, but hopefully all good. Later in life portfolios can come in great use if you need to apply for a job or even a school, people can judge by your work if you are capable of being in their programs.
I think, between the two choices of types of portfolios I'd have to choose learning. That is my own personal opinion though, others may think differently. I just believe that in my situation, I need to learn from my portfolio rather than have a collection of best works. I may or may not need this education down the road but I certainly can learn from it and try to incorporate it in my life.
I think that the authors selection of basic concerns was very well chosen. There needs to be a variety of different works or its just looking at the same thing over and over. That wont show a broad intelligence on subject, only that you know about a particular one. So I think out of all the three variety would be my first concern, not that the other two aren't important. However in my own personal experiences I need more variety in the things I do.

I think the purpose of keeping a portfolio is to show off your best works. In my past writing portfolios we used them so that at the end of the year we could see how our writing progressed. I think the best type of portfolio for this class would be a portfolio of best works considering that we are doing four papers. However, I do believe that there is usually something to learn from each best work piece. In high school we would keep a best work from every quarter so that at the end of the year we could see the difference between our first best work and our last best work.
When the author was discussing “Choice, Variety, and Reflection” as the main components of developing a portfolio, I agreed completely. Choice is very important when it comes to what you should include in your portfolio and how you will organize your portfolio. Deciding which piece is your best work can be difficult when you feel you have more than one or you feel you don’t have one at all. That is why “choice” is important because you need to decide which paper shows off your skills the best.
Variety is also important because including too many of the same style or type of papers can bore the reader or not allow the reader to see all of your strengths in different areas of writing.
Reflection is my favorite part of keeping a portfolio because it allows me to look back and see how I have grown as a writer. To me, it is the most important part of portfolio keeping because we learn from the things we do in the past. We can see the things that need improvement, but we can also see our strengths.

I believe the purpose of portfolio keeping is watching yourself improve as a writer. A portfolio is a collection of feelings, a variety of writing styles, and a reflection of choice. Portfolios are an expression of self, that contain a series of emotions and thoughts which are brought together in a step by step process over time. This step-by-step process gives you time to improve your writing styles and come to terms with the type of writer you are.
After reading into portfolios, I believe that a portfolios “designed for learning” would be most beneficial for this course. Portfolios for learning asks you to , “reflect on the journey more so then the destination.” I believe this is extremely important because when you write you may not always know your destination , but never does it limit you as a writer.
Choice, is a rather common word. We make choices in our every day lives, however, when it comes to making a portfolio we are given the choice in what to include in our writings, what to leave out, and what has significant meaning to us. Choice gives us a foundation for great possibilities.
Varity, is another important component in putting together a successful portfolio. Variety allows you to express yourself in may different forms. Variety allows you as a writer to write anything from freestyle writing to structured pieces of literature.
Reflection, the last of the three principals for portfolio keeping allows you to step back and look at your writings from an objective view. When you reflect you are able to look at your writing as a whole instead of a series of individual assignments. Reflection means, “ to know beyond one’s knowing.”
So to conclude, which aspect is most important to me in portfolio keeping? I believe the ability of choice is the most important principle for portfolio writing and in life. It gives the individual writer a chance to choose which artifacts and aspects of life has shaped them into the type of writer they are today and what events have motivated their writing styles.

During high school, a portfolio was always kept in each of my classes and then the best papers from each class went into it for the entire school year. Therefore, a portfolio is nothing new to me. I believe that a portfolio is a valuable tool in assessing a student’s progression as a writer and student especially a learning or process portfolio. A learning portfolio is not as professional as an evaluation portfolio; however, it allows the student and the teacher to see how far a student has come as a writer from the beginning to the end of the semester. Thus, I strongly believe that this class would be best served to use a learning portfolio.
The author of “Portfolio Keeping” states “Choice, Variety, and Reflection” are the most important aspects of creating a portfolio. These components of portfolio keeping are the most vital in my opinion because they are broad terms that encompass everything essential to making a quality portfolio. Choice is a valuable part of producing a portfolio because the keeper has to pick and choose what artifacts to include and how to organize these artifacts so it looks good for the presentation. Along with choice, variety needs to be included in a portfolio so the writer does not get boring to the reader as he or she is going through it. Variety allows the keeper to spice up the portfolio and make it more interesting to the people viewing it. Variety in a portfolio allows its keeper to show off diverse and different abilities and interests that he or she may have as a writer. In addition, variety gives the author a chance to show off different dimensions of him or herself as a person. Although choice and variety are important, the most significant feature of a portfolio is reflection. The reflection part allows an individual to see how far he or she has come as a writer through the entire creation of the portfolio. No longer does one view each paper as a separate project, everything now becomes part of a whole that allows one to look at their writing ability and pieces in a different manner

I think the purpose of keeping a writing portfolio is to store the work you have done so that it may be showcased at a later time to show off your work and creative talent. I believe a portfolio should be of your best work.
In my opinion the author was correct with regards to the importance of 'Choice, Variety, and Reflection' and how he talks about them. To me choice is about freedom and the freedom to construct your own portfolio is very important so you can show off your own personal strengths. Variety is the spice of life and keeps your portfolio from being dull as well as showing different styles of writing you are capable of performing. Reflection is about looking at your self and seeing a strength or a weakness within your writing capabilities so that you know what to continue doing and what also needs to be worked on.
I believe variety to be the most important of the three because in a lot of circumstances you will be required to roll with the punches as you tackle many different subjects and situations in life and having the ability to adapt from one writing style to another means you will be prepared for anything that comes your way.

The purpose of a portfolio is to combine all your writings and/or work together to show off your own creative and specific talents. It's like the way you present yourself, how detailed and how much time you put in,and it really shows.
In Eng 101 i believe the porfolio that would best work for this course would be the learning portfolio because it shows the process of your writing. Although it is good to have the learning portfolio it is impressive to have a best-works porfolio to showcase your overall achievement of writings.
The author's discussions concerning, "choice, variety", and reflection" are main components of developing a porfolio. It really sets you up for what an excellent portfolio is made of. Just like a syllabus, a good portfolio contains choice, in which you make your decisions on what you need and what you want, but in a careful manner. Also Variety is another main component of developing a portfolio, it showcases your unique strengths and your own taste toward your portfolio. It's nice to see differences in the portfolio, therefore you find your talent and use it wisely within your porfolio. Lastly, reflection is a main component of a developin portfolio because it lets you reflect upon your work, you can see how far you have progressed throughout different assignments within your portfolio. You will be able to see how far you have grown in your writings and learn things you've never known about yourself as well as the diversity between other portfolios.
Choice, variety, and reflection are three main components that i believe will earn my own personal success in my porfolio. If i follow these three components with a taste of my own aspects i believe i can complete a well-done portfolio.
The most important aspect would be variety because you are adding your own personal flavor to your work that no one else has. It helps to find yourself and get to know your work better.

I think the purpose of keeping a portfolio is to make sure everything is organized and at the end of the semester you have all the materials needed. The best portfolio I think that would work best for the course is the portfolios for learning. The author's discussion concerning Choice, Reflective, and Variety seems reasonable to me, and I agree with the author 99%. Choice is that you have to do everything by choice, no one wants to listen to what other people think they should do with their portfolio, so if you do it the way you like and how you planned to do it, then it would turn out better because you'll have more interest in it your way, and you would learn more from it. Variety is basically how you do things, your differences, and how it's a way of showing off your writing and creative skills. I think reflection would be good because you have to put everything together, and give your opinion on your own work, and how you would make it better and practice on the areas you were struggling on. So, you’re basically thinking about how you thought about the whole reflective portfolio.

In my opinion, the purpose of keeping a portfolio is to learn how to organize writings that have been completed over a period of time. There are many different types of writing portfolios. I think the type of portfolio that would work best for this class is the learning portfolio. Personally, I think I will be learning a lot as the class continues throughout the semester. Later in the semester I will know more than I knew at the beginning and my writing may reflect that. The learning portfolio includes items that best represent the learning process. The blog entries that are part of this class can be used as artifacts for the learning portfolio.
I agree with the author’s views on the three main components of developing a portfolio. I think choice, variety, and reflection are major factors that are important when creating a portfolio. It is important for a person to be able to make his or her own choices. I know that I will want to be able to choose certain selections that will go into my final portfolio. It is good that variety is part of a portfolio. I will not always do well on every kind of writing, but by having variety I will have a better chance to find what area is good for me. Reflection is another important factor in creating a portfolio. I think reflection is a good thing to practice in the learning process of a portfolio. The component that is important is me is reflection. I have never had to really reflect on anything in my English classes in the past. I will learn a lot about myself as I reflect on different assignments throughout the semester.

I think that the purpose of a portfolio is to have something with all of your work in it to be able to share with others. It should show off your talents and diversity. A portfolio is a great way to keep everything organized, and is also easy to compare all of your work when you are finished. When you look through your portfolio hopefully you can see the progress you’ve made, and you can reflect on your work. A portfolio can be very useful for things such as getting a job. I think that a learning portfolio would be best for the class, since some people have never kept a portfolio before. I personally have kept a portfolio before for English class in high school. We put all of our papers we wrote in them from freshman to senior year, and then got them back senior year. After looking through it again, I could see how much my style of writing changed and how I grew as a writer. I think that choice, variety, and reflection are the most important components of a portfolio. Being able to choose what you want to include in your portfolio is necessary if you want to be happy with your portfolio. I think that choice is the most important of the three because you need to pick work that shows your strengths and not your weaknesses. Variety is important as well. You need to show diversity, instead of showing only one interest or talent. Variety will keep your portfolio interesting to whoever is reading it. Reflecting on your portfolio is what makes your portfolio worthwhile. If you reflect and ask yourself questions such as why you wrote a certain piece, you will grow as a writer. I feel that I can benefit by keeping a portfolio in this class, and I think that it is a good idea.

Writers keep portfolio's in order to show their best work and also to be able to learn from their mistakes. The latter should work better in our class. because of the fact that we are just starting to bring our writing skills to the next level we need to be able to look back on previous writing, find the mistakes, and avoid making them again. I also felt that when the author wrote about the three aspects "choice, variety, and reflection," that reflection was the most important. it is always most important that one reflects and avoid previous mistakes.

I think the purpose for keeping a portfolio is to be able to reflect back on the ways you use to write, and being able to show how your writing has grown tremendously. Creating a portfolio may also help you find a job, or even a better job in the future. In my opinion I feel that the portfolio for learning would be the best for this class because, it helps to reflect what you have accomplished throughout the course. I feel that it shows how you have grown through your writing. The author’s thought on “choice, variety, and reflection”, to me are key in successfully putting together a great portfolio. Choice and variety helps the student include many different pieces in their portfolio, like blogs and journals to help show their professor different writing processes they complete. Reflection helps the student to be able to go back in the portfolio and really understand why they chose what they did. Choice, to me is the most important component in creating a portfolio of your work.

I believe that the purpose of keeping a portfolio is to collect all of one’s individual pieces of work from the beginning until the end. Collecting all pieces of work allows the student to see how they improve their writing skills throughout the semester and after looking over specific pieces of work, it can help the student fix their flaws in writing and make their papers better written.
The type of portfolio that I think would work best for my English class is one that is based on learning because even though it would be nice to collect all of the good pieces of work, having not so good writings would allow the individual to learn how they can fix their mistakes and improve overall as writers.
After reading part one of “Portfolio Keeping”, I concluded that the three words, “choice”, “variety”, and “reflection” could have different meanings to different individuals. I think that the word “choice” is very important because deciding what pieces of work you would like to put in your final portfolio is the most important aspect. The student needs to be able to choose how they would like to organize their portfolio since organization is key when creating a portfolio. Having a variety of papers in one’s portfolio is also important because having the same type of papers can become boring for the reader and the reader can lose interest quickly. Having a variety of papers also shows how creative the writer is, not basing all of their writings on one subject or type. Finally, reflection is important because one needs to be able to reflect on the type of work they have done. Reflecting on one’s own work allows the individual to grow as a person and shows how they improved over time. I would like to be able to look over all of my writings at the end and realize how much I improved as a writer and to be able to compare myself to previous years of work. Out of all of the aspects, I think that choice is most important. A person can choose how they want their portfolio to be like in the end, whether they want it to be organized, or whether they want just their good pieces included, but most importantly the individual is able to choose pieces of work that express their individuality and strengths. I have never kept a real portfolio with all my writings before and I am looking forward to doing this in the upcoming semester.

A portfolio is one main source or collection where all of your works are placed. This is then used to show what you have accomplished and done with your career to date. A good portfolio would then be one of the deciding factors for whether or not you get that job your applying for.

In our class, I think the portfolio we would try to make work would be the learning portfolio. Some may disagree, but I feel that it would be quite necessary for whoever is reading your work to see your thought process and how you write.

When the author talks about choice, variety, and reflection, it seems as though this only makes perfect sense. These three elements are the bulk and creativity of any portfolio. In my opinion, choice would be the best out of the three though. Your choice is really what makes you who you are and what you work on. The initial choice of what you do represents everything that is in your repertoire. Another element is variety which is what or how many styles you have. Variety is key, because it shows a number of things you have done and not just 10 of the same thing. And lastly would be reflection. Reflection is almost a personal endeavor, because it is you simply looking on what you have accomplished and gathered in your works.

Keeping these three elements in mind when constructing a portfolio will really keep everything in order. All the best ingredients are here but it’s all up to the worker now as to what goes into it.

Based on the reading, my idea of the purpose of a portfolio is to keep works over a period of time in an organized manner. For ENGL 101-018, I think that both “learning” and “best-works” portfolios would be beneficial, but if I had to choose which would work better, I would have to pick the “learning” portfolio because the class is developed for learning, as compared to showing off our individual works. I like the fact that the author believes that it is important for the writer to choose the contents of their portfolio as opposed to being told because it teaches us to learn what we do best and what is important. It is also very important to show variety in a portfolio because sometimes you will need different writings for different purposes. The reflection part is also a key factor in keeping a portfolio because it allows the individual as well as anyone who were to assess the portfolio to make note of strengths and weaknesses. Overall, I think that reflection is the most important part of the portfolio process because it allows you to sit back and take in everything that you have put into it, not only giving you a chance to evaluate yourself, but to give a sense of assurance and confidence.

I think that keeping a portfolio can provide a person with either a collection of their best work, or it can showcase of their improvement from the beginning of their work to the end. I believe that this course focuses largely on improving as a writer, therefore; I would choose a learning portfolio. A learning portfolio would allow me to look back at my writing from the semester and seeing improvement between writing assignments. Choice, variety and reflection are the three main components to a portfolio that shows whoever is viewing your portfolio your range, style of writing and to reflect about your writing. When selecting papers for “choice” and “range” portion of the portfolio I would choose major writing assignments that show my improvement and a wide range of writing styles. The “reflection” portion of the portfolio is very exciting and important because it allows me to look at my writing as a whole and try to look at the writings in another way.

When the portfolio is finished you can review it and see how far you have came in becoming a better writer. I think the best type of portfolio for this course would be a learning or process portfolio, which asks you to demonstrate your learning. This would be the best because creating this portfolio will help us learn from our mistakes and develop into better writers in the end. When the author talks about choice, variety and reflection she is talking about the basic components on starting and completing your portfolio. Choice is meaning to include many different types of artifacts and important artifacts to include in your portfolio, variety means to include your own strengths and different interests in your portfolio, and reflection lets you look at your own portfolio and evaluate it in the
>end to determine where your different strengths and weaknesses are. I think these three discussions (choice, variety, and reflection) are important in my writing portfolio because they help create it, what to include in it, and to look back on your portfolio and evaluate your own writing. The most important of these, I think, is variety because it lets you include many different types of your own writing for example if descriptive writing is not one of your best works and you struggle in that category of writing you could excel in one of your better styles of writing to make up for the loss in your weakness of descriptive writing. I think these three components are very important in creating a portfolio.

I believe that the purpose of a portfolio is to keep and show off the work you have accomplished. The learning portfolio would work best with this type of class because it shows the progression of your writing from the beginning to the present. You would be able to see what parts of the writing process you once struggled with versus how you approach that section today. I think when the author labeled choice as a main component it meant that you as the portfolio holder should pick the selections that you feel are most beneficial. Variety just means to use pieces that are aimed at different areas rather than one main focus. I feel that reflection is the most important because it not only shows off your best aspects but it is showing off in a relative form, a way of showing off who you are as a person.

I think the purpose of keeping a portfolio is simple, to look back on the previous works you have completed, whether they are works of literature or works of art. For this class I think that the Learning Portfolio would be most beneficial because it shows you how you have progressed over the period of time you keep the portfolio. The Best Works Portfolio on the other hand only shows the best works and doesnt show your poor works to see what you have learned from them. I think the author used choice for the portfolio as in your choice of what goes into your portfolio, variety in that you should have many types of works in your portfolio not just one kind, reflection for you giving your personal feelings on that piece work, whether good or bad. i think they are all important aspects in their own ways, but to me i think Reflection is the most important. It lets the Portfolio keeper let people know which works he/she likes, dislikes, worked hard on, blew off, thought were hard, thought were easy, and so on.

I believe that keeping a portfolio is an excellent idea. A portfolio is a collection of your best work. It shows the improvement you have made with your writing. Portfolios are an expression of yourself and a reflection of your writing style. In this course I think that keeping a portfolio will benefit us in many ways in the future. After reading the portfolio book I believe that “ designed for learning” will be really beneficial in this course. It talks about the journey and the improvement along the way, rather than the final objective. We as writers don’t always know when the final objective will be reached. Choice, variety, and reflection are all key components in putting together a successful portfolio. Choice, gives you the option of what to include or what not to include in your portfolio. Variety, allows you to express yourself in many different ways. Reflection, allows you to go back and review your portfolio and learn from it and improve it. Out of these three words I would have to say that reflections would be the most important to me. I believe that the more you write the more you improve. To have the power to go back and look at your previous works and learn from them only makes you a better writer.

I think that the purpose of a portfolio is to map one’s growth in the field of writing. A portfolio can effectively show somebody looking at it how the person transitioned themselves from a mediocre writer to a great writer. A portfolio can also showcase the many styles of writing one may have achieved. It is great to have diversity in your writing, and by keeping a portfolio, one can keep track of the kinds of writing they have already done, and if needed, use them as a reference in later writing. For our class, I’d say an evaluation portfolio would be sufficient. Anybody can take a situation and learn from it, but in our class we are learning to look deeper into things, a.k.a. evaluation. I thin the author chose the passage of “Choice, Variety, and Reflection” very carefully, and I though it was an excellent choice concerning portfolios. It summarizes all the key components of a good portfolio, and that is essential to know in the process of our writing. The phrase “choice” means to me, that a writer is able to choose all aspects what he or she writes. After being given a topic, the writer has the will to choose all aspects of how the paper is written: the format, the wording, etc. “Variety” means to me that a writer has a diversified portfolio, one in which the focus is not on one particular type of writing, but instead covers many different styles. “Reflection” means to me that the writer is able to analyze and reflect on their writings, and even go deeper in depth with them. Also, this means that the writer should write in such a style so that there is room for the reader to have his or her own reflection on what is written. The most important aspect, in my opinion, is choice. The choice of the author to do as he may with his writing is what makes writing enthralling. The uniqueness of a person’s writing is what captivates writers, and if you take this away from a portfolio, reading and writing would be boring.

If you never reflect on your past papers you can never improve"

I believe the purpose of keeping a portfolio is to keep track of your or a groups, best accomplishments, and or best work. I think the best type of portfolio for this course (ENG 101); will be best work and most powerful portfolios. I say best work because I believe that, best pieces should be the first major portion in any portfolio. I say powerful because our main theme is "self, and self is powerful. I think the authors discussion of choice, variety and reflection, was very informative, and on point. My definition of choice is freedom to decide what is best for you, and what has the best outcome. Therefore, the writer has all rights to chose what fits best in his/her portfolio as well as the impact it will have on the audience. Variety to me is being open. They have the ability to talk about different aspects of their writing as well as different events that may have happened in their life; ultimately leading to self-expression. It is important to have variety so you can keep the audience’s attention as well as make a connection with them. To understand your writing, know what it says, and have some sight of what is saying to people is reflection. This all adds up to becoming a better, mature writer by understanding reflection. You are growing as a writer and people will see it in your work/writings.
I feel, as though, variety is the most important to me because of the connection you get with your audience. Not everyone on earth is one way. There are many people alike, yet, they have many differences. With that said, giving variety in your portfolio reaches out to a host of people instead of targeting one or two people.

The purpose of having a portfolio in this class is to show how mature and grow as writers during the year. The different aspects that we will have to write from will help us realize how important it is to be spontaneous when it comes to writing.
The best type of portfolio for our class to use is the learning portfolio. According to the syllabus and the way it was organized, our writing assignments will go a step higher each assignment. This collection will allow us to view our strengths instead of focusing on our weaknesses. Having a "variety" of aspects helps us to get away from being a biased writer.
Reflection is the way a writer uses their experiences or their own thoughts in their writing. When you read their writing, you can get the gist of what they are feeling or where they are coming from. It shows their mood.
Choice is how the writer chooses to write the paper. It can be based on their tone, mood, feeling, and opinion. This also sets the tone for the topic and how they approach it.
The most important thing in writing is choice. This sets the authors foundation for their final view point on the topic. The other two fall into place once the choice is made.
